For Young Adults
As an adult, studying and later, working, my Sunday afternoons were spent de-stressing by rambling in book shops. One of the first things I did when I landed in a new city was to find a book store. So Crossword in Mumbai, Landmark and Book Worm in Bangalore, Odyssey in Hyderabad- these were my regular haunts.
I could not resist buying this book when I
realized it had two of my favourite characters- His Holiness The Dalai Lama and
a cat. It’s a feel-good book where an orphaned cat is rescued by His Holiness
during his travels and is brought to Dharamshala, a small town flanked by the
Himalayas. Once in Dharamshala ,the cat quietly mends a few broken hearts and
brings people closer. There is a subtle thread of Buddhism running through it
of inner peace, balance and letting go one’s fears. One knows that everything
will turn out all alright once we change how we view the world. I particularly
liked the sequence where with her sense of entitlement, the cat gets jealous of
the new dog. Once she realizes the battle he has fought to remain alive, it
makes one realize how every living being strives for happiness and tries to
avoid suffering. The cat does find out how ordinary cats live when she ventures
into the town and makes friends with her own kind. One of those friendships has
delightful consequences. My go-to book when I am feeling low!
